The Blurb

One reckless moment, so many lives

Gemma Dean goes missing one chilly October morning, leaving behind her phone. Texts hint at secrets far darker than Kent Fisher could ever imagine.

When a body is found in his burned out car over a hundred miles away, murder brings the past crashing into the present with the first in a chain of painful discoveries.

Struggling to make sense of a past that threatens to devastate his future, Kent faces his most personal and challenging investigation so far.

But how will he deal with the fallout from one reckless moment that cost so many lives?

My thoughts

Ok, so I already knew I was going to love this before I started – having read the entire series, Kent is one of my favourite characters and I love catching up with him and seeing what he’s going to get mixed up in next….but wow! I did not expect this….!!

Kent is happy. Things are going well for him and he seems to be on cloud 9…..until Gemma goes missing. When he realises she’s gone, he finds some mysterious texts on her phone and calls in his trusted friends and family to help find her. But the more digging he does, the more unexpected things he discovers. Will these discoveries change everything? How many people will die because of the secrets? And will he find Gemma alive?

I am always sucked in from the first chapter of these Kent Fisher Mysteries, and this was no different. As a massive fan I was so happy to see how things were going for him, and did not expect for a second, the things that would transpire! The story is full of twists and turns, you don’t know who to trust, who knows more than they’re letting on, what secrets are hidden, and what the outcome will be.

For anyone that hasn’t read any of the books, Kent Fisher is an absolutely fantastic character. He’s been a bit of a lad in past books (although definitely different in this!), owns an animal sanctuary and is an amateur sleuth who has solved a number of mysteries. I absolutely love him, and really felt for him in this. I love the supporting characters and loved being able to check back in with them; and even these bought some unexpected revelations to the table!

My other favourite character, who deserves their own mention, is Columbo, Kent’s Westie. He’s such an adorable character with quite a big part in this novel. And that’s because Crouch’s own Westie, Harvey sadly passed away towards the end of last year. The book is dedicated to him, and that nearly set me off crying before I even started.

The story will keep you on the edge of your seat. I just wanted to keep turning the pages to find out whether Gemma would make it, and what other secrets were going to be revealed. I also loved getting to see the good ole Kent charm coming out again! There are some jaw dropping moments in this, and I was completely blown away. Kent always manages to get himself into some sticky situations, and this is no exception! And the ending……I have so many questions and just want to know what’s coming next for Kent…….

Honestly, if you’re looking for a fabulous whodunnit, murder mystery series to read, then THIS IS IT! This book can be read as a standalone, Crouch gives enough info on the back stories to enable this, but I would 100% recommend reading the whole series. I started on book 4, and went back to read the beginning of the series because it was so good….and I haven’t stopped reading them since! At the end of every book, I’ve hoped it wouldn’t be the end….I was worried that this might be the last but was SO happy to find there’s another in the pipeline! Yay!

I can’t recommend this, and the rest of the series enough! If murder mysteries/amateur sleuths are your thing, then you will love this so go and check it out! 100% highly recommended by me.

about the author

Robert Crouch is the author of the Kent Fisher murder mystery series. Set in today’s world, the books pay homage to the traditional murder mystery and classic whodunit.

Based on his career as an environmental health officer, Kent Fisher is a different kind of detective, described as ‘unique in crime fiction’ by one reviewer.

Having left environmental health, Robert now writes full time from his home on the East Sussex coast. He loves walking on the South Downs with his wife, Carol, reading crime fiction and photography.
